"There was a time when pampering in Ireland consisted of an extra helping of fried bread with your cooked breakfast. That's all changed. These days, the most influential names in the business are falling over themselves to open lavish spas there. So the big question is, where are the best spas - Britain or Ireland? I'd been rubbed, scrubbed, wrapped and reiki'd at just about every top hotel spa in the UK - time to jump on a plane to find out how they measure up across the Irish Sea...
After Dublin I headed south to Dunbrody House in Co. Wexford, Ireland's answer to the UK's plethora of trendy contemporary country-house hotels. Although the spa at Dunbrody is tiny, I loved the supersexy suede-walled treatment rooms, and most of all, its brazen naughtiness. You'll get no lectures about drinking four litres of water a day here. Instead I was treated to strawberries dipped in chocolate and a wicked smoothie in the muslin-draped relaxation room."
by Susan D'Arcy ~ Sunday Times 2nd October 2005 From "Ireland 3 Britain 1 - Victory in the Spa Wars"
"...the spa is modern, decked out in dark walnut, frosted-glass walls, panels of chocolate microsuede, and high-gloss red. While its the smallest spa I visited (4 treatment rooms), it has the most diverse treatment menu. Catherine chose USPA, an Australian line that celebrates plants, herbs and foodstuffs, for its holistic culinary approach; Elemis because she knew the Irish clientele wants the reassurance of an international brand and Savage Beauty, an American skin-care line, to add indie flair. I thought the USPA lymphatic drainage facial with Laura Meyler, whose gentle technique is perfectly suited to the treatment, was excellent.
Be back in time for dinner as Dunbrody Country House is the Chez Panisse of Ireland..."

Located across the courtyard in an original stone building and with a contemporary interior of wood and natural stone, the Spa at Dunbrody will make guests feel cocooned and at ease from the moment they arrive. The treatment area is a luxurious haven complete with Asian styled serail steam & mud room, relaxation room with day beds and individually-styled treatment rooms all having in-room shower facilities.
The spa offers a unique gourmet experience alongside its Elemis and
USPA therapies. Guests can flavour their spa visit
with a new range of delicious delicacies designed to be taken between
treatments: think strawberries and tarragon chilled soups, champagne
and lavender sorbets, citrus salad with toasted pinenuts and exotic
iced fruit. In Winter think chocolate fondues!! Created by Irish
Chef of the Year, Kevin Dundon, these delights are created to deliver
the ultimate sensory experience. The acclaimed restaurant, Harvest
Room, will also serve a distinctive spa menu with local flavours.
From the moment guests enter the calm and serene environment of
the Dunbrody Spa, they will be able to enjoy an array of adventurous
therapies designed exclusively by Elemis, USPA and Savage Beauty.
Treatments will be healing and therapeutic, restoring the natural
state and purifying the mind from the clutter of modern living.
The spa environment will give visitors time to drift away and dream,
using elemental ingredients which are both potent and exotic. Star
therapies include: the shiatswe body massage – a combination of
Swedish and shiatsu techniques; the rose quartz crystal body dynamic
massage to harmonise energy; the lifeforce facial with rosa mosqueta
oil for the ultimate nourished, toned and dewy skin; and the equilibrium
facial for men.

Spa Etiquette
Our Guidelines are designed to ensure that all of our guests are
able to fully enjoy their spa experience.
We ask that you reserve "time" for yourself rather than
specific therapies when visiting the spa. An important aspect of
relaxation is allowing time to do it properly and thus we recommend
you allow a minimum of two hours for your spa journey.
Your Appointment
- To maximise your experience, we ask you to arrive 20 minutes
before your appointment. This time will be used for your personal
consultation and for you to relax into our surroundings.
- Some of our therapies may not be suitable for all clients; this
will be determined in your pre-appointment consultation.
- Arriving late may interfere with your treatment and in some
cases we may be forced to re-schedule your appointment. All appointments
will end at their scheduled time so that the next guest will not
be delayed. Spa robes, towels and personal lockers will be provided
on arrival.
- Services involving brow or lash tinting will require a patch
test 24 hours prior to the treatment. To preserve a peaceful atmosphere
we request that all cell phones and pagers are switched off before
entering the spa.
- The spa is designed for clients of over 16 years of age so please
refrain from bringing in anyone below this age.
Your Booking
We require a minimum of 24hrs notice should you need to make a cancellation
and a minimum of 48 hours notice for group of 3 or more. Unfortunately,
cancellations made within 48 hours of your appointment will incur
a fee of 50% of the treatment booked; cancellations made within
12 hours will be charged the full price of the treatment.
